6/52 - brave new world

Lily -

Her first day of preschool. She was excited, brave and just a little nervous about venturing out to 'big girl' school!

Eli -

That cheeky look. This sweet little boy channels a mischievous imp rather well...

Miles -

Waking up to the wonderful world around him...

Project 52: A portrait of my children every week, once a week, in 2013.

And a few more highlights from the week that was...

I actually had two babies on the same day... the day Miles was born, we came home that afternoon to discover
my other baby - a 122 page album of my 366 photos of 2012 on the doorstep. Delivered by postman  - or stork perhaps?!

The essential 'new baby' product I now highly recommend - a 4.5 year old girl!
Best entertainment/entertainer  on the market!!

Someone had a bit of a self-hair-cutting incident that resulted in a
fresh new hairdo for preschool - three inches shorter!

Potluck Luncheon at church... always a delicious and delightful time!

We call this the Baby Burrito

When Lily asked how sultanas (raisins) are made and I told her they are grapes dried in the sun  or the oven, she was
eager to try it herself. After a month of leaving some green grapes outside (with eager rotation by Lily each day)
we finally got this amazing result - sultanas!!

Eli's frequent and eager cry is 'Daddy, I help you!!'. Sweet boy is so keen to be his Daddy's sidekick - even with such
tasks as fixing the computer. Daddy is very patient with his overly-enthusiastic young  helper!

First Day of Preschool for Our Girl

Today was Lily's highly anticipated first day at Preschool. Her first full-days of schooling - a big ol' milestone for her and for me!

A very proud Preschooler!
(and yes, I should have used a darker coloured marker on the sign, oops)

Now, just to clarify (as I have come to realise things are so different between states in Australia, not to mention countries), preschool in Canberra is the first year of fully government-funded schooling for children around five years old (I think after 30th April  is the requirement for our school year separation in this state). The kids get 2.5 days a week at the local primary school, though thankfully the preschool is usually a little separate building to the side of the main school so the teenies don't get trampled by the big  kids! It is a year of play-based learning and an introduction to the world of school and teachers and all that entails. It's a full school day (9am to 3pm) and Lily will be going two days one week, three days the alternate week (rather than a half day every week, which is a bit more too-ing and fro-ing than a mama with a newborn wants to be doing, so I'm super grateful they have that option!). I still get confused about what this year is called in other states - I think it could be called Kindy in Queensland?? (I grew up there and that's my vague recollection, lol) I recently found out NSW doesn't have any public schooling until the full-time kindergarten year! Amazing how different it is in each state... not to mention the difference in school age cut-offs... but anyway I am off on tangents now and that's a whole other discussion!

Where was I?

Oh yes, my little girl - off to school!

With a newborn in the family, I have hardly had time to focus on this big transition. For example, after dropping her off this morning I stumbled upon some paperwork and realised I had not purchased ANY of the stationary supplies they were supposed to bring along. Oops. Bad mama... and not so good start to the school year, but oh well. I am playing the 'newborn' card, ok!

Anyway, to back track.... I wondered how she would go in a new school, away from the home for a full day and so on. All summer she has been talking mostly excitedly about it, though I think she was a little nervous not knowing anyone there (it's our new in-area school since we moved). We spent the night before picking out her first day outfit, packing her school bag with hat, sunscreen and so forth and chatting about the day to come. I find there is a fine line with my girl between preparing her by talking upcoming transitions through, and focusing on them and building them up too much so that she gets overly emotional about it. So we chatted a bit about what a special year it was to be, going to this big girl school but didn't overplay it! She was excited though certainly there were glimpses of nervousness. Last night she admitted her worry was that I would not come and pick her up and that the teacher would not have my phone number to call me!!! Poor kid. I assured her that not only did the teacher have my number and that I would never forget to pick her up (I hope!!!) but that my phone number was written in her school bag if she ever needed it!

She started the day bounding into our room this morning and announcing 'There are two things I love - cuddling my baby brother and going to preschool!!!' Well, that sounds like a good start!

I was taking Lily's obligatory 'first day' pic when Eli came barreling out of the
house bleating 'What 'bout me!? What 'bout me?!'. Turns out he thought he
was going to school too and Lily's mini-lunch bag was his new school bag.
Poor kid, he was dying to go with his sister!  In the least we could let him be
in a photo!

My two big kids... and to think it used to just be these two!

Love this sweet girl, so proud of her for diving into a new school...
I admit I missed her during this long school day!

Trying to be brave (both mother and daughter!)

Her protective and doting Daddy was the most emotional one about the big step it seemed! Awww, so cute. So this morning the whole family (yes, all FIVE of us) piled in the car to take her on her first day... though we didn't want to make a scene so Mark, Miles and Eli hung out in the playground outside while I took her into class. Her Daddy just wanted to keep an eye on his little girl heading off to school!

In the classroom she giddily said hello to the teacher and chose the drawing table as her first activity (they do table time activities to start the day). I let her get settled, then I decided I should make a swift exit. She cheerfully and distractedly said goodbye to me, but then as I started to go I could see her little eyes looking around like 'Ummm, now what do I do here?!' I knew there was a tipping point she was teetering on (copious weeping on the other side), so quickly introduced her to another little girl and at that point the teacher came to chat to her (distract!). I decisively cut the apron strings which were pulling me to linger by her for the rest of her life the day and exited the room. Of course, Mark and I peered through the window as we left and she saw us and gave a huge happy grin and wave. With a sigh of relief, and only a few tears welling in our eyes, we left.

She could have lost it but she chose to be brave and excited. You go, girl!

Straight into the action at school! She drew me some flowers and an 'M' for Mummy :)

School bag on the hook. Girl busy with new friends. Time to leave her to it!

After a strangely quiet day (wow, that girl's chatter usually fills up the entire house), Mark eagerly went to pick her up. She came home grinning from ear to ear and gave me a huge delicious hug. The most amazing thing was her little brother Eli. All day he had been asking when we were going to pick her up and seemed quite lost without his playmate. When she came home, he just started giggling and laughing almost hysterically and then Mark and I noticed he was also crying - tears of joy and emotion at seeing his sister again, I guess?? It was so weird/sweet- he just seemed truly overcome with happiness that she was home!! Aw, little dude, he loves hanging out with  her so much, he will really miss her a lot.

Another sweet moment was when Lily told me about how another little girl was crying that day and Lily tried to 'make her happy again' and also got the teacher to check on her. We had talked about looking out for other kids who seemed lonely or sad, so I was thrilled to hear she had looked after a new little friend.

After a bit of downtime after her huge day, we headed out that evening for an early-bird pizza dinner at our local Italian restaurant - which was Lily's choice. We wanted to do something special to celebrate her first day of school and it was a really fun time dining out as a Party of Five! Miles just chilled in his capsule, but I think he enjoyed it, haha, and I know the older kids sure did, wolfing down their delicious pizzas!

Celebrating the first day of school at La Piazza. Miles was very excited about his first time dining out!

She was impressed!!

A very big day. Another one to come tomorrow and many more afterwards. Our little girl, an official preschooler - so grown up and ready to venture a little further from our nest...

Love my little birdie!

PS As it's taken me a while to post this I can update on the second day - which I was curious about as it can often be tougher once they know what's in store! She was happy and excited to go but when I was about to leave she suddenly said worriedly 'I don't want you to go, I don't want to stay here'. A new little friend piped up 'But we are gonna play!' and she just broke into a grin and said happily 'Oh yeah!! Ok!!' and that was that. All good!

Because every blog post needs a cute newborn shot included!
Those arm rolls. *swoon*

Backyard Camping

Mark has been dying to take the kids camping for ages, and we thought starting off in the backyard was probably a good introduction to the concept. Being summer and all, it was nice to finally check this little adventure off our list as we have been talking about doing it for quite some time. The kids, needless to say - were beyond excited at this crazy idea of sleeping outside!

We borrowed a small pop up tent from some lovely friends and Mark and the kids spent the morning setting it all up. A BBQ for dinner seemed fitting and whilst at the shops Mark let the kids pick out a bag of marshmallows. I am not exaggerating in the slightest when I say Eli carried that bag around, clutched tightly in his little hands, for the rest of the day, asking only about every five minutes if it was time to eat them yet!!!!! Yeah - seriously!

With all the excitement and spotlight on the new little dude in our home, it was really special to have an evening focused on two amazing kids who are simply the most devoted, loving, affectionate and least-jealous siblings that parents could ever hope and pray to have. So very grateful for their beautiful, selfless attitudes! It was a really simple and fun evening doing something that seemed so 'radical' and hugely exciting in their little worlds. Yet it really took no trouble (just borrowed a tent and set it up) or money (just the cost of the marshmallows, haha) for a whole night of adventure and quality time - those invaluable and immeasurable things!

Lily was so excited she could not stop squealing all day about how happy she was. The grin was perma-fixed to her sweet face. Eli was just out of his mind with glee - possibly mostly about the marshmallows!?

Spending the afternoon 'trialing' the tent and playing house.

Testing out the cosy beds. (Note marshmallows in hand)

A boy and his bag of marshmallows.

BBQ picnic dinner - for  the genuine camping vibe! Yes, Eli had to put down bag of marshmallows in order to eat, haha!

Working those utensils!

Little girl verrrry ready to roast her first marshmallow!

Toasting from a very safe and closely monitored distance! Lily was of course super cautious and careful. We were not sure how Cannonball Eli would go but he actually
was quite safe around the little fire too! No mishaps and some good lessons on fire safety learned.

The thrilled look of a girl who just toasted her first marshmallow!

I got one, Mummy!

Dressed in warm PJs for a night outside!
Little bit in love with this pic... though I just remembered there is actually
a third little one to be included now!
Every now and then it still hits me I have three kids!

Waiting for Daddy/Bed time

Little brother Miles comes to check out the excitement and  looks forward
to the day he can join in on the fun!

A pre-bed brotherly cuddle

Yep, this is my crazy family.  But I still love them!

After a BBQ dinner and marshmallow roasting, the kids got into their PJs and scampered eagerly into the tent for bed time. Miles and I retreated inside for the night (yeah, I'm not that brave, haha!) after kissing Mark goodnight and wishing him luck!! He was armed with a flashlight, iPod and book to keep him entertained whilst the kids slept. For about an hour I heard peels of laughter and happy squealing drifting in through the open windows. That's the sound of childhood, magical memories and an awesome Daddy giving devoted time to his kids. Made me just so happy!

I wondered if they would last the night out there but indeed they did! Mark reported the next morning that they told stories and jokes for ages, wrestling, laughing and singing songs. So cute. Finally close to 9pm they started to drift off to sleep. Lily was the first to fade but Mark said Eli kept whispering in the dark. He asked him to quiet down so to not wake his sister but he kept going so Mark crawled over there to investigate and found Eli whispering stories to Lily's baby doll!!! Too funny! Anyway, they all (yes, including Daddy) fell asleep shortly after!

The only night time drama was Eli waking at 2am to go to the toilet. Mark started to take him inside, Lily woke and freaked out at the idea of being left outside so all three of them trooped inside so Eli could use the facilities!! Thankfully Miles and I slept through that one, and they all went back out and slept till morning.

Well, I call that a success on every level!

So, honey, when are you taking the kids camping out bush??!

what we see, we love

Gazing at my peacefully sleeping Little Boy Blue.

So much of his newness I never want to forget.

Those lips, that button nose, those wrinkly hands, that belly, those dark locks.

Most of all - the fresh joy he has brought to our family. A place to pile all our love and adoration.

We love you to pieces, little Miles!

#1 - baby daze (2 weeks)

My last first year...

That's what I was thinking about today. Miles is two weeks old and if indeed this is our last baby, it's the last time we go through this season of newborn-ness.

*pauses to sob*

The desire to cherish this is on overdrive, and makes me aware that this stage is indeed a quickly-passing season. Night-feedings, milk comas and a bundle I can hold in the crook of one arm will soon be a thing of the past. It is hard not to get sappy and emotional when I think as each day passes 'I may never have a baby this small ever again'. Ok, ok, get it together, Kate!!

As this blog is probably as close as I will get to a decently recorded baby book, I thought I might do a fortnightly (possibly monthly - let's be realistic!) update on Miles, his routine and milestones etc, to track his passing through babyhood. It may or may not be interesting to anyone else! ;)

Late night feeds accompanied by my 'must you photograph me?' face

So very new...

Hanging out with Daddy

'I being gentle!'

Sooooo, where we at?

Still just pretty happily chilling out in our little cocoon  I think most parents have ages and stages they prefer, or just feel they 'get' a little more... where your parenting groove is, you know? Some may think I am crazy for saying this but one for me is the newborn stage! I really love it and admittedly find it pretty straightforward. I am well aware that many do not so much enjoy the infant phase... and don't worry, I have other less-preferred age groups (around 9-18 months for example!), but newborns? Love 'em. They eat, sleep, snuggle and they stay where you put them, haha! I even kinda bizarrely enjoy the troubleshooting of when things are out of whack. Of course, a million variables such as colic and reflux can complicate the situation but even with that (Eli had some reflux) it doesn't tend to stress me out too much. There is a rhythm (even amidst the occasional chaos!) and simplicity about caring for a teeny little one that I just love... and of course the teeniness that is so enchanting!

We are roughly following the Babywise approach and routines again, as we did for Lily and Eli. I know that routines are not for everyone, but hey, it led to happy, well-rested babies for my first two, so we are just doing what works well for our family. Totally respect every parent's right to follow the approach that feels right to them! The basic gist of what we are doing is following an 'eat, wake, sleep' cycle. Not letting Miles go longer than three hours during the day between feeds (e.g. feed sooner if he is hungry, but not longer... we wake him from nap if needed to feed). This helps him get plenty of calories and 'wake time' in the day so he learns to differentiate night/day. My baby mantra is 'sleep begets sleep' - the more babies sleep, the more rested they are and the better they will be able to keep sleeping! Overtired babies end up with  adrenalin coursing through their little bodies which makes sleep (good, solid, non-broken sleep) a struggle - leading to a vicious cycle of over-tiredness. So I keep a close eye out for tired signs and try to keep baby well rested - which means more sleep for everyone - bonus!

So right now the rhythm is - wake up from nap (already his little body is regulating so he often wakes up exactly at three hours, it's amazing!), then breastfeed (he is a fast feeder, normally just ten minutes on one side is the most he will do - but he is packing on the pounds so I know he is getting plenty). Sometimes he goes right back to sleep after his feed which is fine, but if he can stay awake he can do about 30-45 minutes of wake time (e.g. looking around peacefully, or more likely getting enthusiastically snuggled by siblings!) before he starts to show tired signs, at which point I swaddle him up, cuddle and kiss him, then lay him down drowsy but awake so he has the chance to put himself to sleep. Mostly if the timing is right, he just drifts right off to dream land!

At night time we let him wake us when he is hungry. I give him a 'dream feed' before I go to bed around 11pm - after this feed/around midnight is when he would sometimes have an unsettled period (I am pretty sure babies have a built in sensor so their eyes open as soon as you close yours?!) though in the last few nights this seems to have disappeared and he is settling down to sleep right after the feed - yay! He then generally wakes around 1.30am and 4.30am for a night feed. Then I wake him about 7.30am to start the day again - unless I'm feeling really zonked and decide to give us all a sleep in! Then it's pretty much rinse and repeat the cycle for the day!

So, that is our days right now - pretty much on a three hour routine. Of course, babies are not robots so that is just the basic cycle we aim for, but we stay very flexible - feeding and snuggling as the young gentleman requires! However, for the most part our days fall into an  easy rhythm, and it's nice to have a bit of predictability - for him, for me, and for the family... as much as one can with a newborn, anyway!

Well, at two weeks there is not much else to record! His job right now is just to look adorable, and he does that with panache! I am still obsessively smooching that delicious little neck. He is starting to be more awake and alert, gazing at me and the world with those deep, dark, blue eyes. Gaining plenty of weight - the midwife was impressed with how quickly he gained back and exceeded his birth weight. He currently sleeps in a bassinette at the end of our bed. The biggest miracle after having two extremely spitty-uppy babies is that Miles does not spit up pretty much at all. Let me tell you, it is a whole new world - a much cleaner, dryer, less smelly and stained world! I am seriously shocked at what a different experience it is to not carry huge clothes all the time and have constant spit up going everywhere.

When Miles drifts off to sleep he sometimes smiles and chuckles in his dreams and I know you can't call it a 'real smile' but it warms my heart just to see what foreshadowing of what his happy little face will look like in the years to come. My sweet little man - I can't wait to see your personality unfolding, to see you finding your place in this family!

Miles. Two weeks old. Our little Prince.

Hello there!

Sister had to pop in for a snuggle and a photo with her beloved baby brother!

Not everyone can pull off fluoro yellow, but Miles manages quite well, I think!

5/52 - Snuggly

Project 52: A portrait of my children, once a week, every week, in 2013.

This week has been all about snuggling into our little nest with our newest family member!

Although I plan to do individual portraits of the kids each week, cuddling and doting on their new baby brother is such a big part of Lily and Eli's world right now, it seemed only right to feature that in this weeks portraits!

And so....

Lily...
She mothers him. Pretty sure she considers him to be hers. The way she coos and cuddles and whispers sweet nothings - it just comes so naturally! It is both heartwarming and hilarious. I feel like she has been almost overwhelmed with the intensity of her love for her new brother, summed up when she proclaimed to me matter-of-factly this week 'I love Miles so much, I don't ever want to love anybody else.' (!!!)

Eli...
Proudest big brother in the world!
He constantly asks 'Where Baby Miles?' and wants to look at him, check on him, hold him and of course enthusiastically kiss and cuddle him.... a little too much at times! He loves his little brother with a passion, that's for sure...

Miles...
He takes my breath away. My beautiful baby boy. I can't stop kissing his delicious neck. I can't stop gazing at that adorable face. You are such a sweet, placid, calm little boy, slotting into our family as if it could never have been any other way.
