how to get free babysitting for life // organise a babysitting swap with friends!

I don't know about you, but 'date nights' around here have always been pretty sparse and sporadic. As much as we would have liked otherwise, of course! As important as we know they are to keeping the marriage relationship strong, especially during these crazy years 'in the trenches' with young kids... the reality is it's just plain hard to make it work. Basically 'cos of those golden dollar signs!! For our family, on a single income, paying a babysitter is just not an option on any regular basis. Unless we want to spend our date sitting in the car in the driveway because we can't afford to go anywhere after paying the sitter ;) I know, I know, we could somehow cough up the cash and just make it work, but in reality it's just hard to spend that kind of money, and especially to then go out while thinking 'Are we having $100 worth of fun and romance yet??' Haha ;)

I should add that we are very blessed to have my parents living in town who are wonderful and involved, but we don't really like to ask them to babysit for us just because we happen to feel like going out to dinner. Just feels like too much of an imposition, if you know what I mean. And so.... we have our weekly cosy Friday 'date night in', which is lovely and often all we have energy for anyway... buuuuutt.... there is something nice (esp for a SAHM!!) about getting dressed up and heading out on the town with your beloved once in a while!! Amiright, ladies?! Just to have a complete conversation, hang out amongst grown ups, maybe even wear heels!? Time, glorious time, to focus on each other, and really talk. We all know how important it is to keep that relationship connection strong through these years when most conversations in the home surround topics like bath-time strategies and whose turn it is to read the bedtime stories. I'm happy to say even after almost a decade of marriage I still loooove spending time with Mark, just the two of us. But the chance to do so was few and far between. (insert sad face)

And so one day a year or two ago, I was flicking through a  magazine (yes, they still exist apparently) and read a brief mention about the idea of a babysitting swap between friends/parents. "Light bulb!" I had also heard of large group systems, with a bunch of parents swapping babysitting services and using some kind of token or points system and complex calendaring. But, it just always seemed too difficult to orchestrate and with so many people involved, I worried it would get too hard/ripe for issues to crop up, or just take too much time to maintain, especially amongst people who perhaps didn't know each other too well.

But it got me thinking. I wondered about simplifying it and scaling it back to just one other set of parents... and so I decided to chat with my lovely friend Amber (who doesn't have any family in town) and see if she was keen on the concept. Um... she sure was :) Let's be honest, most of our Saturday nights are spent just sitting on the couch these days, so why not just do it at a friend's house so at least they can go out and have some fun??

So, here are the basic principles we came up with for a successful, long running, non-burdensome 'babysitting swap' between friends....

  • Take turns having a date night (duh!).
  • Sitter goes to the home of the couple getting to head out for the night.
  • Kids are fed, brushed/bathed, PJed and otherwise ready for bed. They are either in bed already or just need a quick bed time story and tuck in (The idea is not to make it a lot of work for the sitter/mama who has already been kid-caring all day!!). Usual start time is about 7pm.
  • Babysitter provided with TV remote, Wi-Fi password, cuppa and block of chocolate (essential!!) What more could you want?! :)
  • After each turn babysitting, we just book in the next session for the other person when it suits both parties.

As we are dear friends and there are just two of us, it is easy to keep things flexible. After one person has done babysitting, they just suggest the next night they would like to go out and we work it out between both our calendars - usually for a Saturday evening. We don't worry about things like curfews or tracking precise hours and we keep it flexible e.g. once we had an early outdoor movie session so Amber kindly started around 6pm instead, another time we had her kids sleep over here rather than me go there so they could have a whole night off and all the kids enjoyed a sleepover!

We have been having roughly one date night a month each for about a year now!! It's awesome :) Seriously awesome!! SERIOUSLY AWESOME!! ;)

(Ok, you get the idea about how much we are all loving this arrangement!)

The best thing? The date night is guilt free (because you are reciprocating the favour, so there is no guilt or pressure or rushing home) and also cost-free :) So you can splash out on dinner AND a movie, haha.

It's also been such a blessing to give dear friends a regular night out they wouldn't otherwise get. And we are so grateful they do the same for us!! Yippee.

Now I know you might be thinking this is not a groundbreaking idea - 'Why thank you, Captain Obvious!'... ha. And I know lots of people already do something like this! It ain't original but it's one of those things that if you don't think of it... you just don't think of it! So if you, like me, just hadn't thought of this simple way to get more date nights with your beloved, then I hereby bequeath this concept to the interwebz ;)

You can make it work with a bigger group or more formal arrangements, but between two friends, this relaxed approach has been working well for us for over a year now. I just want to do a happy dance when I think about all the wonderful babysitting-cost-free, guilt-free date nights Mark and I have enjoyed that otherwise would not have happened! It's been such a blessing to our marriage :)

So..... if you would like more outings sans kids, grab a friend in a similar situation and suggest something like this. You can even share this post around on Facebook and whatnot, as a not-so-subtle hint to friends that you would be keen for a partner in this nifty plan.

Whatever way you do it - Date nights! Happy marriage! Happy kids! Helping friends! Win, win, win, win ;)

PS Editing to add another tweak on this plan I wanted to mention. After telling my lil' sister about this, she cleverly came up with a twist that is working so well for her. She teamed up with a friend who also has a toddler, and one day a week, one of them takes both toddlers from morning till after naptime - then the next week they swap. So one week she has a crazy day with two toddlers, but the next week she can bank on a blissful morning of peace and quiet to chill out or get some of that 'to-do' list checked off! Love it!! x

Long Distance Babysitting...

A divine laksa

It's not very often that you have friends drive all the way from Sydney so they can babysit your kids, huh?! Sound strange? Well, it is, but in a very good/strange way! Ok, let me back up and explain...

Every year after Christmas we usually go to a Christian family camp up near Sydney called Camp Challenge. Lots of fun, sports, inspiring Bible lessons and spiritual talks and discussions, 'camp food' (like school camp food!), uplifting singing, deep chats, kids running around and a general good ol' time. We love it. One of the evening activities that I organise (I'm on the Board) is an Auction Night where the money raised helps others come to camp who can't afford it.

Most people come to the Auction Night with money they just want to give to the cause, so all manner of useful (and many useless/funny) items and services are auctioned by their fellow campers in the name of raising money - all with lots of laughs! Things like a chocolate bar might go for $50, an 8 year old offering to fetch your meal at lunch time and clear your tray might rack up a good $100, and so on, often getting up quite high for some very generous items and professional skills that are offered! All in good fun and for a good cause.

Well, our good friends and lovely couple Josh and Binh offered up babysitting services. Always keen for a night out, we bid and we bid hard - especially as we knew it would give them an excuse to come stay with us for a weekend as they are Sydneysiders. I guess you could say we are willing to pay friends to come visit us but le'ts not say that, heehee! With laughs all around, we finally got outbid by another couple... but never mind, I did win the services of that sweet 8 year old boy who cleared my meal tray with a flourish for the rest of camp!! But then - shockingly - the couple who won the babysitting for some reason decided to donate it to us!??!! We tried to refuse but to no avail. Wow, people are nice, huh! (Though I must say this does tend to happen quite a bit, with people winning auctions then gifting the prize to someone else... what can I say, it is a very generous and loving bunch of people I'm blessed to hang out with!).

And so... (are you still with me?)... so it came to be that six months later schedules aligned with 'babysitting' as a very handy excuse for our lovely friends to come visit us for the weekend. They trekked down from Sydney on Friday night.. with a packed Esky filled with pre-prepared fillings to (within seconds of their arrival) whip up incredible fresh Rice Paper Rolls w dipping sauce, followed by delicious bowls of fresh Laksa. Yeah I know... they are amazing and we were spoilt. And did I mention Binh is 26 weeks pregnant?! Crazy town. We did manage to top the meal off with some Sticky Date Pudding - I mean, we had to do something as the hosts, right??!

After a delicious Friday night, we spent Saturday chilling with our guests through the quiet rainy day, with pancakes for breakfast and about a million rounds of hide and seek - yes, the kids were basically in love with their guests and their fun games and endless enthusiasm! That night Mark and I ducked out for a late afternoon movie and an early dinner while the kids had an absolute blast at home with Josh and Binh. It was a nice quiet night out with my hubby, and a sweet chance to talk more about his new job and all of life's other goings on.

Suffice to say... I bet plenty of you will be wanting to put up a bid on this magical pair at this year's Challenge!! But only if you beat us to it! ;)

Josh and Binh, what lovely, godly, giving, generous and kind people you are - don't think you even know how much you blessed our family this weekend, but you came just at the right time! Thank you so much for your friendship and your loving time this weekend! Come back soon - but perhaps we can do the babysitting for your new little bundle next time!

Vintage Wedding Wonderland...

We attended the sweetest wedding in Sydney today, of two lovely friends joining together in love and life... Dan and Tabitha. Tabitha is a graphic designer with amazing talents and a love of vintage which the wedding sure showcased in all its glory - romantic, whimsical, quaint and beautiful with so many special touches! The love story and uniting faith of this gorgeous couple made it a day we were sooooo excited to celebrate with them! They are going to have such a beautiful and inspiring life together... so happy for them!

Yet another failed family portrait attempt - these days I can only laugh!

The Great Hall at Sydney University was a stunning and very formal ceremony venue...

Keeping the kids contained in their seats and quiet while we waited 40 minutes for the bride to arrive was.... challenging... to say the least! Not to mention getting through the ceremony too! (Did I mention it was in the middle of naptime?) But we made it, and it was an honour to see the bride and groom wed in such a gorgeous location, with so much love, faith and romance emanating through the hall...

The children waiting patiently for the bride... sometimes not so patiently!!

Eli saying hello to baby Samuel, looking adorable in his little shirt and pants!

It was also the first time my two kiddies met their three sweet cousins, the triplets! As many other people were meeting them too and it was all a bit rushed, what with people getting married and so on, it wasn't a big emotional meeting but we have plenty of time for that in the coming week! Nevertheless, Lily was so excited,   saying 'I love my little cousins' and both kids loved staring at them, tickling, cuddling etc.

The beautiful bride makes her entrance...

The Happy Couple - Newly Wed!

The kids run wild in the beautiful courtyard after the ceremony

Just such a little dude!

After the ceremony, the kiddies were looked after for the evening by 'Auntie JoJo' (having the time of their lives, I might add!) which meant Mark and I got to have a 'date night' of attending the reception together sans kids. It was a beautiful evening of delicious food, gorgeous decorations, catching up with heaps of dear friends, listening to speeches that were both hilarious and touching, dancing and of course - celebrating this beautiful union!

The amazing Wedding cake made by the bride, her mother and grandmother!!

Tabitha made this gorgeous little favour bags containing these delicious cake pops
(choc truffle) covered in white chocolate. Divine!!

Adorable and quaint table centres

Loved the table seating chart and guest book... just so many thoughtful little touches!

A night celebrating Love with my love...

Retreating and a little Romance!

After my rejuvenating and refocusing day before, my retreat continued when I awoke in my hotel room around 9.30am to Room Service tapping on the door to deliver my breakfast. Ooh yeah, I could get used to this!!! (But won't, don't worry, that's part of the fun!)

Ok, the food wasn't all that amazing but hey, it was delivered to me and I didn't have to make it so I was happy! Not to mention getting to eat it and drink my cappucino while reading my book in bed. Oooh yeah!

I checked out at 11am, feeling all kinds of chilled out, then headed to the shopping centre for a little retail therapy to finish off my retreat. Well, buying flannelette sheets isn't all that glamourous but it needed to be done and it was good to have the time to do it - I even got to cruise around in an op-shop, which I love to do, picking up a few little treasures including some fun things for the kids.

I then hurried home, renewed and refreshed, to reunite with my precious family. Ohhhh, so good to be home again. My most precious three greeted me, waiting eagerly out the front of the house for my return, with squeals and laughs, kisses and bear hugs.

This is where I belong and I only went away in order to return more fully to them. Yes, home is where my heart is, with my sweet three.

They had a fine old time in my absence, with pizza-making, games and good times. Mark had everything in hand including the laundry... what a champ!! Lily assured me she had missed me and it was so good to snuggle up with them and talk about what wild adventures we had been up to.

Ready to head out for a night on the town with my love!

That night, we had already organised to head out for a date night after a friend had offered to babysit. After already being away for 24 hours it seemed decadent to go out again so soon, but it turned out to be perfect - a lovely opportunity to spend time with my love, and to talk about all the things I had thought about in my time away, and to discuss together our family values and priorities for the year ahead. Not to mention eating ourselves silly, laughing together as we tend to do (we consider ourselves highly-amusing in our own little world!) and then heading to the movies for a late film. A fabulous night out on the town reconnecting with my beloved just us two was the perfect ending to my weekend retreat of refreshing...

*happy sigh*

Bind us together, Lord...

There is nothing quite like attending the wedding of two people committing to living and loving together for the rest of their days... to remind you of the day you did the same.

They sang the same song in the wedding service that we did at ours... the first line of which we have inscribed inside our wedding bands...

Bind us together, Lord,
Bind us together
With cords that cannot be broken.
Bind us together, Lord,
Bind us together,
Bind us together with love.

A joyful day for the newly married couple, who have waited many years to find each and now find the wait was worth it, and then some...

A joyful evening celebrating the newlyweds, feeling spoilt to have a whole afternoon and evening out with my guy, and enjoying the lake views as the boat on which the reception was held drifted around the lake...

A joyful reminder of the blessing it is to be married today and every day to my beloved.

Never take for granted...

Why yes, it's Parliament House...
