highlightsreel // it's christmas, it's summer, it's everything...

It's that 'most wonderful time of the year'. You know the one, haha! It's not all picture-perfect moments of course, but it's still a season filled with love and magic and ready-made 'misty-eyed memories' when you have little ones to experience it all with. I really love it. I try to stay free of the lure of over-the-top commercialism and frantic busyness so we can focus on family time and simple, fun traditions. Guess I am pretty intent on soaking it all up now, before they start rolling their eyes at the idea of going to look at Christmas lights (gasp, surely not!!).

Not so many photos (compared to what I used to take!), but just enough to place mark the time and place... our Christmas of 2015. At the end of our hardest year as a family, and in the midst of other stresses, we stopped and took time just to be so grateful for the good that God had given us. It was a year of loss and pain but through it we still found hope and even joy, and a way to treasure what matters even more deeply.

Busting out the traditional new Christmas PJs the night before Christmas...
along with the traditional new book, before the traditional Christmas Eve lights
tour... haha! ;) #traditionnnnnnnnn
Sometimes you just gotta accept the photo you get. Awkward smiles and all!
Snuggled up, eagerly devouring her new Christmas Eve book. My little bookworm!

Oh, that twinkling magic. Never gets old!

There are some things that just strike you, those quintessential parenting moments like assembling all the Christmas presents under the tree, filling the stockings, tweaking it all just so and anticipating the delighted squeals come morning. #parentinggold
PS Disclaimer that these gifts are not all for the kids from us!!! Many of them are for or from extended family. We aim to keep our gifts few but meaningful for the kiddos.
Christmas stockings filled with little goodies (mostly stationary and toiletries!), along with new cushions for their beds and stainless steel mugs :)
And so the Christmas morning frenzy begins. Paper flying everywhere, happy kids with gleeful squeals, thankful parents with bemused smiles, sweet moments and memories made!
Eli was beyond stoked to get his own pencil sharpener in his stocking. Had to immediately sharpen a brand new already-sharpened pencil! My funny boy xx
it was Mark's idea to get the kids each a 'spray'. Needless to say they thought this was the COOLEST thing ever - and half the bottles were drained by day's end and our house smelt like a (cheap) perfume factory!!
Little arms stuck right into the bottom of stockings, rifling around for any remaining goodies.
The aftermath.
The aftermath of 'Santa snacks', haha. We don't 'do' Santa but the kids still get a kick out of some of the fun little traditions
Dressed for Christmas brunch with the family. Blurry but the best we got! They had
a wonderful day, these little munchkins.

This was the first year we were able to do something I have been wanting to for many years, but were waiting till the kids were a bit older to be able to participate. Our family spent lunchtime in the inner city helping serve Christmas lunch and love and cheer. It was a really special day... as I said to the kids in the car on the way there, we had spent the morning focusing on ourselves as a family, being so blessed with gifts and each other - now it was our time to focus on and bless others.

I don't want to harp on too much about it and I didn't take photos, but I just want to say that seeing my kids eagerly walking around on their own amidst the tables, saying hello to the lovely folk who were there, taking drink orders and carefully delivering them, cheerfully clearing plates and rubbish, and sharing their own Christmas lollies, filled my heart to overflowing. Beyond overflowing. It was such an honour to be a very small part of the incredible team who all worked so hard to serve a beautiful lunch to a couple hundred people.

To be honest, it was an emotional Christmas this year, missing our dear David. Spending some of the day doing something so true to his beautiful spirit of service (he was always helping others), really helped me get through the day, with a smile amidst the tears. It was a small way to honour him. I hope this is something we can continue to do in years to come... it made our Christmas day so much more meaningful.

Putting Lily's new beanbag as well as new textas to work on Christmas evening. Do you remember the thrill of wanting to put all your Christmas gifts to use as soon as possible?!
Lily with her two best buddies at the annual Christian family camp we go to every year between Christmas and New years.
Happy Little Hippies!
One of the kid's activities was tie-dying shirts and so all the kids looked very hippy, haha!! So cute :)

Beautiful Hannah was doing Henna tattoos on anyone who wanted one... which meant every kid in attendance of course. Just to up the hippy factor even more, lol!! Eli loved it.
Miles was VERY intrigued. Drawing on your hands??? Surely this is not okay!?! Ha! His face - so fascinated and a little perturbed.
Note Miles hand on the table, just waiting and waiting for his turn.
Finally, my time has come!!!
Ok, the hippy thing is really getting out of control, haha! We have a charity auction night and one of the gorgeous African girls was offering hair braiding... Lily's dream!!!! So we bought it for her and she was very pleased with the result... even though she had to sit for over an hour to get it done. #worthit

Here's the thing. We are just not one of those family that really commits to dress up/themed events. I just can never summon the energy or enthusiasm to spend weeks hunting through opshops and bargain shops for every little item to complete a show stopping costume. And definitely not the type to spend the night sitting up stitching away at some outfit from scratch. No, not us. Or should I say, not me. We are more the type to scrabble around the house at the last minute for anything vaguely on theme, that will at least tick the box of 'Made a passable token effort'. Good enough for me, haha! I much more enjoy marvelling at the costumes of everyone else who really made the effort to pull off those jaw dropping creative costumes. I love it... on someone else, haha!

All that preamble to say the annual dress up theme at our camp's New Year's Eve event was 'Black and White'. So, true to form, the day before camp we scrabbled around the house and this is what we came up with. Thankfully, the kids are totally happy with this casual approach, they don't know any better, ha!! Hopefully I can show my love in other ways, if not staying up all night paper-macheing monster masks and whatnot.

Lily decided to be a mime. No idea how she came up with this idea or how much
miming she has seen. But the idea of the make up was a big draw card I think!!!
#onpoint
Eli chose to be Batman and what he lacks in fancy costumes he MORE than makes
up for with oodles of character, don't ya think??
LOVE HIM.
Miles decided he was a robber/superhero??! Plenty of character, anyway. He mostly
ran around shouting 'Ah-hah!!!!!'

Back home and the school holiday entertainment was watching and trying to help Daddy and a friend build a deck (at long last!!!) out the back. Oh, and I'm totally blaming the construction on the horrendous state of that glass door. Or maybe I should try blaming the little people who can be seen smearing fingers all over it?! #badhousekeeper
The deck framing provide a cool race track, as well as gymnastics platform! Love how kids always find a way to play...

What is this? Ha xx
A trip to the Cotter and what did we see....
He spent a happy half hour simply sitting and tossing stones into the creek. The simple pleasures, as well as the thrill of being able to throw rocks till one's heart's content ;)

Father and son... handy men. And me, with my heart melted all in a puddle at this scene.

A Super Charged Hot Lemon Drink to Cure the Winter Blues!

When the winter chills start setting in and the sniffles not long after, the first thing I do is start simmering up a saucepan of this nourishing goodness!

This super charged hot lemon drink is an immune-boosting dynamo, helping prevent or at least recover faster from colds, coughs and congestion... plus, it's full of goodness, and I think it tastes pretty delicious too! Consider it an immune boost that will help your body fight off the sniffles as best and quick as it can.

It's a bit of a 'throw it all in' type recipe (all of mine are, haha!) but as I am always being asked by friends for the recipe, I thought I should take the time to blog up a general guide to the ingredients, at least!! Feel free to add more or less depending on your taste buds (oh, and don't be freaked out by the garlic, you really can't taste it!)...

Super Charged Hot Lemon Drink Recipe

Ingredients -
  • Lemons - 3 or 4
  • Tumeric - a couple cm's of fresh if possible, or 2 tsp ground
  • Cayenne Pepper - about a third of a tsp (depending how much kick you want!)
  • Ginger - 2cms of fresh ginger, or 3 tsp of the jarred stuff
  • Garlic - 5 or 6 cloves
  • A quarter cup or so of Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Water - Approx 600-700ml or just enough for the lemons to be able to float and simmer.
  • Honey (add later when drinking)

Instructions -
  • Quarter the lemons and throw them in a small saucepan, yep, rind and all! So much goodness in the zest, you don't want to miss a bit! It all blends up in the end, truly.
  • Add in the garlic bulbs, the knobs or teaspoons of ginger and tumeric, and the ACV.
  • Add water
  • Simmer on a low heat for about 15-20 minutes or until the lemon skins are very soft
  • Blend the whole lot up very well with a stick mixer (or pour into a blender, or do the whole thing in a Thermomix if you have one!) and it's done!!

This recipe makes a concentrate, to which you can then add extra hot water and honey to taste whenever you want to make up a cosy mugful. Keep it in a jar in the fridge, and just pour about an inch into your mug, topping up with hot water and however much honey to taste - maybe two or three teaspoons as obviously the mix is pretty tart! And honey is good for sore throats too :)

Tip - I like to make 'frozen lemon discs' by pouring an inch of the concentrate into the bases of muffin tins, freeze then later pop out the frozen disks and put them into a bag in the freezer. Then they are portion sized and ready to quickly pull out and use whenever the sniffles dare strike!

So why is this little concoction so good for you? The lemons are packed with vitamin C, and the cayenne pepper is fantastic for soothing sore throats and breaking up congestion and coughs. Tumeric is an amazing anti-inflammatory, anti bacterial, and anti-viral. And we all know ginger and garlic are full of vitamins and goodness! The honey also soothes sore throats and if you can get it unprocessed, also full of nutrients for ailing bodies. Oh, you could also add a little coconut oil to your hot drink too for another immune boost... why not, haha!

A disclaimer that (as you probably can guess from the ingredients) this is a very strong and tart mixture. Feel free to use less of the concentrate, with more water and honey, till it is palatable for you! I find the more I drink it, the stronger I can handle it, haha! ;)

The kids love this drink and ask for it as soon as the mildest sniffle begins... preferably served in a travel mug with plenty of honey, while they are snuggled up on the couch under a blanket. They totally like to milk the slightest sickness, haha! ;) My tip for serving this to kids is to start it off very weak and sweet till they can handle the sourness as well, then over time you can add in more and more of the concentrate too!

Happy soothing sipping, my friends!

#highlightsreel // favourite faces, familiar places, treasured traditions...

Ok, I am still so far behind in recording our little family highlights reel here (and please remember this is a highlights reel... the reality reel is not so photogenic, haha, but we all know it is part of every family's real life!) - however I am inching closer to 2016 so sloooooowly catching up!!

Here is our December. After we returned from our Brisbane trip, gearing up for Christmas. We had a lot going on in our family during this time, it was not the most relaxing Christmas season, that's for sure! But as the kids wound up the school year, we still took the time to make memories and savour the little moments, and carve out time for our most treasured Christmas traditions.

These are the days....

My first crop of  garlic!! It took six months to grow but totally worth it for this delicious, flavoursome, organic goodness!!
Even with giving a bunch away I was hopeful it would last our garlic-loving family a whole year - and so far so good!!?

A bouquet of beetroot
Not sure if dolly just got rescued by these two firefighters or what!?
My sweet son. He has such a generosity of spirit xx

Character in spades!

This face. It slays me. Those beautiful brown eyes, my sunshiney boy xx

A spunky little lady...not your average princess!!
strong is the new pretty

what joy she brings xx

Decorating the Christmas tree is always one of my most favourite times.
The parents sit back (well, Mum takes photos while Dad sits back, ha!)
and watch with sentimental smiles while the kids intently and gleefully decorate
the tree. The result may be lopsided but it's every so gorgeous!

Reading the first book in our Christmas Book Advent...
Lily wanted to make her own Christmas cards for her buddies!
No fear. Dancing up the front during the community Christmas carols!
Enrapt by the opera singer with her little school buddy!
The day after the 'last day of school for the year', we have a little tradition of serving the kids breakfast in bed. Breakfast is very simple, just stuff they love - toasted cheese croissants and greek yoghurt with fresh raspberries - and juice! They are soooooo excited about this they even eagerly stay in bed till I bring it to them, haha! Their delight is worth a few crumbs in the bed once a year... a simple but sweet way to celebrate a big year of doing their very best at school.
Look at that face!! Worth a few crumbs or what!? ;)

It just ain't Christmas without our $6 Aldi Gingerbread Kits! A sugary, crafty concoction of fun and  memories, sticky fingers and sneakily sampled lollies. The kids love assembling them. While they may not win any gingerbread house competitions, we have a good ol' time.
Ha!!!! How to even caption this image?! ;) #mycrazykids
When your favourite meal is baked potatoes, the best way to get them on the dinner menu more often is to offer to make them for the whole family. And so she does.
Decorating baubles to hand out at the local shops. Glitter glue and gem stickers - what's not to love!?! ;)

I was kinda proud of my home made drying rack, haha!
Clearly these photo settings were completely off, HA! But consider this a place marker to record the memory of surprising the kids one night by getting them up after bed time to go see the Christmas lights! The surprise factor (and hot chocolates in travel mugs) always makes it all the more exciting!! :) A very special night xx
All ready to hand out their home decorated ornaments at the local shops. A sweet and simple way to do a little random Christmas kindness. It is always a wonderful experience, especially to see them intently chase down unsuspecting shoppers so they can foist an ornament on them!! So many folks are overjoyed and you can see their pleasure in taking a moment from the pre-christmas shopping hustle to enjoy that little kindness. Many people automatically reached for their wallets and we had to insist 'No, no, it's a gift!!!'. Some people (I think assuming we were selling them) refused to accept our little gifts, to the utmost distress of the kids especially Miles, lol!!! He was so shocked and disappointed if anyone declined. We live and we give and we learn. Love to see my kids taking babysteps into the world, learning lessons of generosity and kindness as a family.

And that was our December...

xx Kate
