8.52 {what scares you} tired goggly eyes

A tuckered out little boy, eyes ringed by goggle marks, taking a little poolside power-nap xx

Soon, all smiles again, my little sunshiney son....

We have just returned from a two week road trip up and down the East Coast of Australia. We swam, swam, swam, like never before! For most of the trip, I either could not be bothered to pull out the 'big camera' (so slack!) and then when I did found it wasn't working as I had killed the battery. I revived it just in time to take a couple of shots so here they are. When I get my act together, I might try to put all my phone photos into one big blog post just to commemorate the trip as it really was something special.... we visited SO many places and saw SO many lovely friends. It was a really special trip, filled with adventure and memory making and sunshine!

This week's photo theme was 'what scares you'. Well, it was something that scared not me but my darling middle man, which was swimming. Ok, not a huge fear but he just wasn't yet super confident in the water. We made it a little challenge over our two week trip up to Queensland to try and swim every day.... and we did, and then some! The kids swam every day and often two or three times in a day! From hotel pools to my Dad's pool to the beach to the river... they swam and swam and swam. And this kid, this beautiful boy, went from a fairly tentative swimmer to swimming three laps of the pool in one go, diving, jumping and just going for gold. It was amazing to watch, I was so proud to see him flourish with confidence :)

One morning at my Dad's pool, the kids decided to make a world record of spending the longest time in a pool (ha!). Three hours later, Lily was asking me to call the government and inform them of their progress and Eli was asking if they could sleep IN the pool overnight so they could keep going. When I let him know that would not be an option he eventually dragged himself out to have a little power nap poolside. Then jumped back in for another hour or two!

a bedtime ritual to remember // the last baby

The 'last baby' tends to make you cherish babyhood to an extent you never quite did before. Sweet moments become all the sweeter, steeped in a preemptive nostalgia, aware as you are of how fleeting and precious these crazy days really are.

Hence, the bed time routine with my littlest one, Miles, has tended to linger a little longer and feel a little more delightful each night... especially as he gets all the closer to a big boy bed, when I can realistically no longer pretend he is my little baby, heehee! (Just kidding, he is my baby foreverrrrrrrrr, right?!)

I've never been one to drag out bed time too much, but how can I not with this little cherub? Putting him to bed is one of the most tender moments of the day. After bed time preparations are done, books are read and wrestles with Daddy have occurred, I pop him into his sleeping bag (putting it on backwards so he can't take it off overnight and freeze!!) so the snuggles can commence.

Miles is a stickler for routine and loves to remind me of every step. This kid does not forget.
Firstly, he reminds me to switch off the lights. I tote him over so he can flick the switch, then we say 'goodnight' to the little wooden airplane that swings from the ceiling, giving it a little push to send it soaring.

Now, this boy. Simply put, he just gets a kick out of seeing how far he can push things! Yet, it's not in a truly rebellious or stubborn kind of way, he doesn't even seem to really care about the outcome - it's just for his own amusement. As soon as I clearly and firmly lay down the boundary, he accepts it, basically just shrugs and moves on (with a twinkle in his eye that showed he was just testing for his own entertainment anyway!). Perhaps because he knows that a boundary once set is not movable goal, so there is no point getting too upset about it?? But being a little scientist, he just likes to test it over and over again, just in case!? ;)

Case in point, the 'snuggle blanket' for our song time. First, he asked for one blanket to snuggle with while I sang our special song. Sure thing, sweet child! (Trying not to take offence at my clearly too-bony shoulders, haha!). Then a few nights later, he asked for two blankies to snuggle. Ok, ok, sure, why not? I went with it. The next night he decided to step it up a notch, and request three blankies!! Seeing where this is going (and not wanting to collapse under a mountain of blankies), I said 'No Miles, two blankies are enough now'. He responds 'Awwwwww, want three blankies!!!', pretending to whine when really he is simply teasing (I suspect he discovered this whiny tone from older siblings *ahem* and likes to try it on for size). I repeat that two blankets is enough, and he cheerfully just replies 'Ok!' and snuggles in. I mean, really!!This must be a third child thing, haha. This little guy has such a sense of humour, our whole routine is full of little jokes, teasing and 'playacting'. I never knew a two year old could have such a sense of comedic timing :) He also likes to try to add an ever increasing number of steps to the routine, just to see how elaborate he can make it before I pull in the reins. Cheeky... give 'em an inch and they take a mile, right?! ;)

Ahhh, parenting. One day you stop and realise both parent and child are kinda just experimenting on each other, right?!

Anyway! The Blankie issue decided, he lays it on my shoulder, getting it perfectly cosy for nestling. As I begin to sing 'our song', he wraps one arm around my neck and uses the other hand to gently pat my hair - and sometimes even requests that I take it out of its topknot, lol!! Snuggled in, I sing the song that's been his since birth, 'You are my Sunshine'. If I attempt to skip the second verse, he starts to sing it as a prompt, especially the high section that is his favourite,  'I dreamt I held you in my arms'. I swoop him down into bed, blanket smoothed on top and tucked in tightly, rolling it under his arms so he looks like a baby burrito. I coo goodnight as I stroke his forehead and brush his hair to the side in that unrequired but oh-so-satisfying maternal gesture. We exchange smiles and grins and looks that say 'This is our special time, isn't it? We love it.'

'Goodnight, sweet Miles. Mummy loves you, Daddy loves you, God loves you.'
'Love looooo!!' he grins.
He then likes to follow up with 'What you doing? Cuppa tea??'
'Yes, Miles, I'm having a cuppa tea and a rest now. Goodnight, my lovely boy'
'Night, Mummy! See yaaaaaaa'

Grinning and giggling, he watches me as I leave the room, calling farewells. Every night I am aware that it's one more night of this precious routine, and one less night to go. So many moments to cherish in motherhood, surely one could not possibly 'cherish' them all while still functioning as an actual adult! We kinda have to pick and choose. And so, this one? Oh, cherish. Cherish I have and I will.

Goodnight, Baby Boy. Thank you for being so delightfully you, for precious memories and a night time ritual to treasure xx

24/52 - Bunk Buddies // Changing Rooms // Grandpa's French Toast

It was a busy milestone-filled kind of long weekend around here. Not only did my Dad and his lovely wife come to visit us, but they provided a good incentive to get the new bedroom arrangements sorted out to free up the guest room Miles has been occupying. After a zillion hours (more or less) of online research, we finally ordered a bunk bed for Lily and Eli. So, our busy weekend of fun with the Grandparents also contained bedroom shuffling and associated tasks!

Miles moved from the guest room to Eli's old room (and into the cot!), and Eli moved into a bunk bed with Lily. We assembled the bunks, and ripped out, re-structured and repainted the wardrobes to more efficiently store all the kid's clothes. The house was littered with kid's toys and clothes while everything got sorted and shifted. It is the dawning of a new little era in our home!

The big kids were beyond excited to be sharing a room... and yes, much giggling and chatting was had at bedtime! These two are already so delightfully close, but room-sharing is cementing their sweet bond even further. I love to overhear their precious and hilarious little conversations in the dark (I've secretly left my iPhone voice-recording in the room a few times for posterity). They also love gleefully presenting themselves at my bedside in the morning when their toddler alarm clock lights up!  They seem more of a 'duo' than ever now. I know they will store up a treasure trove of memories from these days of room-sharing.

Lily

Proud and pleased to be on the top bunk!

We thought she may have been nervous, especially using the ladder, but she scampers up and down skillfully, carefully and confidently. Well done, my darling.

She loves her cosy little top-nest :)

Thankfully, the bunk is sturdy enough for me to clamber up for night time cuddles and chats... not sure if I am always going to be nimble and energetic enough though?!

Eli

Proud to be in his Big Boy Bed, he was thrilled to 'gift' his cot to his little brother, Baby Miles.

Eli had a massive transition, not only moving into a bed, but also a bunk bed and sharing a room with his sister!

Being Eli, he of course had to check the placement of every boundary around this new arrangement! The first night of 'freedom', he was in and out of bed like a yo-yo, coming out to make all kinds of requests, trying on his gumboots at 9pm (!!), and chatting and giggling with Lily till all hours... to the point where she was asking him to be quiet so she could get to sleep! He was just so.so.so excited.

A few strategies have been employed to keep him in his bed after a set grace-period, and thankfully he is calming down now! No doubt there will be further (mis)adventures in the future as he learns to cope with his new found freedom but all in all, he is doing well.

He is such a grown up boy now, that is for sure. My little man, it is so good to see you take this leap and relishing this milestone!

Miles

'Are you leaving me here in this Baby Jail, Mummy?!'

Haha - seriously, he loves being in the cot and it's great he now has space to wriggle around to his heart's content... though it's disconcerting to see him scootch from one end of the cot to the other!

It is so good having him set up in his own room - at last!

'Now I can really streeeetch out!'

Love that furrowed little brow!

Her favorite vantage point.

We had so much fun shopping together for new cosy flannelette sheets and doona covers for their shared room.
You can't quite see but the doona covers are pink/blue versions of the same stripe and spot. Too cute!

When we were little, whenever Dad cooked, it was French Toast. I like to tease that it was all he could cook, haha.
I have such sweet memories of us girls lined up in front of dishes of mixture, dipping and flipping!  Dad introduced my kids to the wonders of the dish and it was pretty darn adorable to see them in the kitchen together. :)

Grandpa explains the finer points of French Toast flipping to an enraptured and inquisitive Grandson

'So, you're saying it's all in the wrist?'

'Let me just check if the milk/egg ratio is correct'

She's got the writing bug...

9/52 - where they sleep

Lily

Sweet girl on her bed. Happy, cosy place for my daughter.

Eli

Such characteristic things about my beloved middle child encapsulated in this photo!

* A black eye from whacking it on the side of the cot when jumping up and down excitedly when saying goodnight to Daddy. Enthusiastic to the point of hurting himself, that's Eli!
* Sleep suit on backwards so he doesn't take it and his pyjamas off and freeze overnight. You gotta get creative with this kid!
* He has always slept with a muslin blanket (or two or three!) and a variety of toys clutched in his arms. Recently I noticed he has developed this strange little habit of twirling up the corner of one of the muslins (usually the blue star one at bottom of image is his fave)... and sticking it in his ear. Unusual indeed (truly!) but I love it just 'cos.... it's him!

Never want to forget these quirks and charms from these early years... my funny little fellow!

Miles

Oh, Miles.

Your bassinette currently hangs out in the guest bedroom. Clothes in baskets all around the room, a change mat on the double bed. You don't seem to care in the least about your temporary accommodations and soon you will have your very own room when your brother vacates the cot for you so he can share a bunk bed with his sister!

Can't believe I managed to capture this mega-yawn. I think he is hinting for me
to please leave so he can get to sleep!!

More highlights from the week that was...

Making pizza dough with Daddy as per our usual Saturday night routine. Oh yeah, we rock out around here, haha.
The kids love watching the yeast 'activate'.

'Little tiny bugs alive!' says Eli.

Family movie night on a rainy day. Miles wants to join in even though he can't see the screen.

Dinner in the backyard... with extra upside down flair from Mr E

In her happy place - pottering around in her little outdoor kitchen/cafe
(as she has christened it)

I was rushing around trying to get ready to leave the house, making phone calls and packing bags and all manner
of things. I got off the phone and saw these two occupying themselves. 'We doing silent reading!' Eli proclaims.
**melt** I was extra grateful because I had been working with Eli recently on not interrupting when I was on the
phone and I could see he and Lily had decided to keep themselves busy like this while I was talking. Just when you
think it will never get through, it does... (well, until it needs to be re-taught again!!).

A visit to Nana's house requires a backpack (to be like Lily) which he wears
all morning.

Wrinkly little baby feet.

Just had to add a few more squishy baby feet. They kick around so much it's hard to capture them!

Yawn.
